Silicone vs TPE sex dolls New Zealand.

The sex dolls we carry are manufactured from two different materials, silicone and TPE.

Silicone

Silicone is a generally non toxic, non porous material. It is reasonably smooth, with a more “plastic”, finish, with most dolls made from silicone having a slight sheen to them. Silicone is believed to be hypo allergenic and free of phthalates.

While silicone is relatively firm, some softer blends, as well as gel implants in different areas of the body, such as the breasts and buttocks, can mitigate this firm feel to a certain extent.

Because of its non porous nature, silicone can be sterilised in a number of ways without the material breaking down.

Water based lubricant is advisable for use with a silicone doll, just in case there are ingredients that are not compatible with the doll’s silicone blend.

Silicone dolls can be painted with semi permanent, realistic details, such as blood vessels and skin blemishes. Make up is most often semi permanent to permanent.

Thermopoly Elastomer (TPE)

TPE is a generally non toxic, porous material. It is soft – in some cases highly realistically soft – and warms up to match your body temperature with contact. TPE is generally believed to be free from phthalates.

Because it is porous, TPE cannot be fully sterilised, and must also be kept perfectly clean and dry, away from any moisture. Bacteria and mould spores can grow inside TPE if a doll is not fastidiously cared for.

It is for this reason that we recommend using Femidoms (female condoms) with all TPE dolls. We also recommend only purchasing a TPE doll with a removable vagina, and replacing the removable vagina insert every three to six months. Even using a condom with a lubricated TPE vagina will force lubricant into the TPE’s pores, contributing to mould and bacteria.

Dolls made from TPE, especially the ultra soft blends, feel particularly nice to make full body contact with, because of their overall softness.

TPE dolls require periodic rehydrating with pure mineral oil to maintain their softness and elasticity. You cannot use silicone lubricants with a TPE doll, and any condom that contains silicone lubricant should either be avoided, or rinsed thoroughly before use to remove any silicone residue from its surface.

Note: There is no such thing as a “Medical Grade sex doll”. TPE and silicone sex dolls use additives, softeners, skintone pigments, surface paint and other agents, which change the nature of the material, eliminating its medical grade status.

Retailers all over the world seem to parrot each other with this dangerous, misleading language. Some refer to sex dolls (even the same brands we sell) as “medical grade sex dolls”. Others use misdirection and simply say their dolls are made from “medical grade” materials, which can make buyers believe that the entire doll is medical grade.

Just like any product you can make, while the base materials may be food grade, cosmetic grade or medical grade, that doesn’t mean that the final product retains the medical grade status of one of its ingredients.
